US asserts Somaliland is part of Somalia

US government has ruled out any hope to recognise the breakaway Somaliland less than a week after region’s leader Muse Bihi Abdi reached Washington.

US lawmakers and US diplomats warned that a policy to endorse Somaliland as an independent state could have the unintended consequence of breaking up entire Somalia.

They also argue that a U.S. recognition of Somaliland would severely damage Washington’s relations with other partners on the continent and the African Union, which does not recognize Somaliland.

Molly Phee, the US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs who met Mr Bihi Tuesday said she had discussed “strengthening US engagement with Somaliland within the framework of our single Somalia policy.”

Larry Andre, US Ambassador to Somalia held a series of interviews with local media where he said Washington’s policy on Somalia will not change in spite of the trip.

Somaliland has its declared unilateral independence from Somalia in 1990 after the fall of Somalia’s central government led by the then late Mohamed Siyad Barre.

Despite relative peace and sucessful parliamentary elections in the region, So.aliland did not yet gain recognition from international community.

The political stakeholders from southern and northern Somalia had severally held talks to ressolve their differences but the meetings bore no fruit.
